US Special Committee on Aging

The United States Senate's Special Committee on Aging, currently chaired by Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), was established in 1961 as a temporary committee. It was granted permanent status in February, 1977. While special committees have no legislative authority, they can study issues, conduct oversight of programs, and investigate reports of fraud and waste. Note: Senior victims of fraud can report it to the Fraud Hotline.

The Special Committee on Aging has served as a focal point in the Senate for discussion and debate on matters relating to older Americans, and often submits its findings and recommendations for legislation to the Senate. The Committee additionally publishes materials of assistance to those interested in public policies which relate to the elderly.

For more information, visit the Committee's press releases page. It is a gold mine of legislative issue and hearing information, and resource links, plus: you can sign up for e-News; order publications; view the latest list of issues and press releases; get prescription assistance ... and more!

Erving - Annabelle Lucas, 92, an Erving resident passed at home surrounded by her daughter and friends on February 28 after a yearlong battle with Leukemia and heart disease. Annabelle, the daughter of Maryann Castonguay and Phillip Paradis, was baptized Marie Anna Belle Irene Paradis. However, her family and friends called her Ann or Annabelle. She lived her early years in the "Patch" in Turners falls and then moved to Canada Hill in Greenfield where she, her siblings and neighbors played baseball, picked blueberries and slid down birch trees in the "buckwheat". She attended St. Ann's Parochial School in Turners and shortly after graduation from Greenfield High School, married the boy next door, Ernest Lucas, and had one daughter, Bernadette. Annabelle was a loving and devoted mother and spent as much time as possible with her daughter instilling an adventurous spirit, a willingness to test the limits and to go where others have not. She and Peg Browning started a Cadette/Senior Girl Scout Troop and provided the girls with fun adventures, learning experiences, and opportunities they might not have otherwise had such as trips to Washington, DC and camping. Annabelle attended Greenfield Community College and graduated with a secretarial degree. After graduation, she worked at UMASS Amherst as a secretary for 30 years where she made lifetime friends. After retirement Annabelle traveled, was an active participant at the Greenfield Y and Erving Senior Center. She loved volunteering at the Erving Public Library and working on their spring plant sale. Ann was a presence in town and was regularly seen at town meetings and walking her dog. Annabelle will be most remembered for her quiet strength, determination, resilience, calm manner, compassion and unending generosity to others. What she enjoyed most was visiting family and friends and helping them when in need. She was a fabulous cook, and her Victorian Toffee, jams, fudge, pies, cakes, and other delectable treats will be missed. Ann is predeceased by her husband, Ernest and siblings, Lorraine, Fredrick and Edmund and son-in-law, Bruce Georgian. He attended Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School and was the owner of Metal Man Heating and Air Conditioning. Besides leaving his mother, he also leaves behind three close sisters. Debbie Cartier, Diana Huber (and husband, Mark), Lynne Brillard (and fiancé Matt Sherrill); several nieces and nephews, Danielle (Cartier) O'Donnell (and husband Ryan), Kerin(Cartier) Salvatore (and husband Matthew), Briana (Huber) Rizzotti (and husband, Rick), Christopher Huber, Lauren (Brillard) Young (and husband, Matt) and Matthew Brillard (and wife Grace). Great nieces and nephews. Ella, Ava, Kennedy, Maddox, Mikey and Julia, all whom he adored dearly. He also leaves behind an extended family. The Begin's; Ruth (aka Momma Ruth), Chris (aka Kit), Chuck, Mary Jane, and the late Craig Begin. In the early years he lived with Chuck, Patty, and their children, Kate, Dan, Sawyer, and Kelly. He was affectionately known as "Uncle" to them. The kids visited him regularly and brought board games with them to keep him entertained and laughing. But David was just as good at making that clan laugh as well. Chuck once wrote this about David: "He was a person that touched many lives. He did for others before himself. A teacher, a mentor and just all around good person. The kind of person you wanted to be around. He went out of his way to help a friend." David never married but he leaves behind all his hunting and fishing buddies that he remained true friends with since childhood. Not many people have that luxury of long and true friendships. Those are the same friends that visited him almost every single day in the hospital and spent almost the entire day by his side. Not to mention the amount of seafood and special meals he requested and they delivered before his last days. Now that's true friends. We should all be so lucky. We will ALL miss David's humor, blue eyes and especially his "Irish Goodbyes." Funeral services will be Friday, March 22, 2024 at Saint Andre Bessette Parish (formerly known as Holy Family Parish) 2 School St. in Amesbury, MA at 10:30 a.m. Burial wil be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Amesbury following the Mass. Andover - Florence Marciszka, born in Presque Isle, Maine, comfortably passed away at the age of 103 on Saturday, March 2, at the Andover Manor Nursing and Rehab, where she had been a resident for the last six years. Florence shared life with two husbands who have both passed on: Colburn Estabrooks and Stanley Marciszka. Of four children, three have preceded Florence in being promoted. They were Betty Rajotte of Haverhill; Phyllis Desmet of Lawrence and Richard Estabrooks of Newburyport. Florence's surviving son is Ron Estabrooks (NHS 68), who lives in California with his wife, the former Cynthia Davis, two children and one grandchild. As the eldest of ten siblings, who all left this earth before Florence, I can not attempt to include names nor can I accurately account for the many living grandchildren, lots of great-grandchildren and a fifth generation arm of the family. Mother Marciszka can be considered nothing short of our family Matriarch. Not to be forgotten, when Mom was ten years old, her Mother passed away, and Mom became the "mother" for her siblings getting everyone fed, cleaned up, dressed, and off to school; did household chores; and helped where Dad needed help on the family farm. Florence's last job was at Western Electric in North Andover. She enjoyed several positions during her lengthy tenure there, where she was always proud to tell people that she was a CWA local union employee. During these last years, a couple of family members have always made themselves available when help was needed for Mom, and I know she would like for me to thank: Janice (niece) and Bob Catanzaro of Haverhill; Kathy Nelson (granddaughter) of Haverhill; Val (grand-niece) and Mike Horgan of Haverhill, and Kim and Jim Potts of Rowley. Also, the family would like to thank Andover Manor and all their staff for the very caring attention for Florence's comforts and needs. An hour of visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, followed by a the Funeral Service at the Funeral Home at 11 a.m., with burial at Belleville Cemetery, Newburyport, where she will be laid to eternal rest. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that a donation be made to either a dementia or cancer charity.

For many years Barbara worked as an executive secretary at MIT, and loved all aspects of her position. Barbara and Hugh did not have any children, but they certainly enjoyed being with their many nieces and nephews, whom they cherished dearly. She is survived by her brother, Richard Gates of Nashua, NH; her sister, Sandra Durkee of Haverhill, along with several generations of nieces and nephews as well as extended family. She was predeceased by two brothers, Ronald Gates and Bruce Gates. An hour of visitation will be held Wednesday, March 13, 2024 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Highland chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury, followed by a Funeral Service at the funeral home at 10 a.m. She will be laid to eternal rest at St. Joseph Cemetery, Amesbury, at a later date with a private family burial. Vladimir Putin has ruled Russia for a quarter century. This weekend's election results confirmed that he will reign for another six years.

Putin's hold on the Kremlin gives him control of the world's largest nuclear arsenal and a military that's been at war in Ukraine for more than two years, ever since he launched an invasion in February 2022.

That war has killed or wounded hundreds of thousands of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers, but despite these losses, the Russian military is pressing forward.

Ukraine faces the stark prospect of a fight in which key US military assistance is in question. So what will six more years of Vladimir Putin mean for the war in Ukraine? And where do both militaries stand at this point in that brutal war?

Neuroscientist Nathan Sawtell has spent a lot of time studying the electric elephantnose fish. These fish send and decipher weak electric signals, which Sawtell hopes will eventually help neuroscientists better understand how the brain filters sensory information about the outside world. As Sawtell has studied these electric critters, he's had a lingering question: why do they always seem to organize themselves in a particular orientation. At first, he couldn't figure out why, but a new study released this week in Nature may have an answer: the fish are creating an electrical network larger than any field a single fish can muster alone, and providing collective knowledge about potential dangers in the surrounding water.
