US Special Committee on Aging

The United States Senate's Special Committee on Aging, currently chaired by Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), was established in 1961 as a temporary committee. It was granted permanent status in February, 1977. While special committees have no legislative authority, they can study issues, conduct oversight of programs, and investigate reports of fraud and waste. Note: Senior victims of fraud can report it to the Fraud Hotline.

The Special Committee on Aging has served as a focal point in the Senate for discussion and debate on matters relating to older Americans, and often submits its findings and recommendations for legislation to the Senate. The Committee additionally publishes materials of assistance to those interested in public policies which relate to the elderly.

For more information, visit the Committee's press releases page. It is a gold mine of legislative issue and hearing information, and resource links, plus: you can sign up for e-News; order publications; view the latest list of issues and press releases; get prescription assistance ... and more!

Information for SHINE - Fuel Assistance - SNAP Programs

Learn about resources that are available to you locally. COA Outreach Coordinator Audrey Allen can help you learn about available local resources and current happenings in our community.

SNAP (Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program) can be used to supplement your food budget costs. Money saved through SNAP could be used toward your medical costs. SNAP is income-based, but it is your income after shelter and medical expenses are deducted.

Home heating and energy assistance (a.k.a. Fuel Assistance) season runs from November 1st through April 30th and is available for eligible homeowners and renters, including households whose cost of heat is included in the rent (12 month assistance in that case). It pays directly to your primary heating source vendor, and automatically includes electric and telephone bill discounts if you are eligible, saving you money to use for medical or other expenses.

The SHINE Program (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) provides free health insurance information, counseling and assistance to all Massachusetts residents with Medicare.

Newburyport - Beverly F. (Morrill) MacBurnie, RN, MEd, 87, passed away at Advinia Care Country Center on April 13, 2024 after a long illness. She was born in Newburyport, the daughter of the late Everett and Muriel (Chouinard) Morrill, and remained a lifelong resident. She was married for 66 years to another native Newburyporter, Robert W. MacBurnie. They have 2 daughters, Martha and Pamela. Both Bev and Bob came from large, extended families, who mostly stayed in the area, so family was an important part of her life. Birthdays, weddings, barbeques, family reunions, she was so happy to be there. Bev was a proud member of the Newburyport High School Class of '54 and for years they had both reunions and reunion meetings to plan the reunions! She got her RN through the Burbank Hospital School of Nursing, Fitchburg State College and remained close with several of her classmates. The art and science of nursing was her passion and her calling. She worked at the Hale Hospital in Haverhill, the Anna Jaques in Newburyport, and did private duty nursing. A strong proponent of vocational education, she went on to develop and direct health careers education programs at both Northeast Regional VocTech and Whittier Regional VocTech, at the secondary and post- secondary levels. She was in charge of Licensed Practical Nurse, Medical Assistant, and Dental Assistant programs. Her students are working in health care facilities throughout the region. When her daughters were in high school, she got her Masters degree in Education from Northeastern University. In the 1990s, she was active with the Board of Registration in Nursing and the Massachusetts Legislature that resulted in Governor Paul Cellucci signing an act expanding the role of nurses in the delivery of health care services. She loved Atkinson Common. A longtime member of the Belleville Improvement Society, when Beverly became President of the organization, she expanded fundraising and grant writing, and oversaw the renovation of the park from the Plummer Ave entrance to the front of the park. Monuments were refurbished, trees planted, facilities updated. When she was no longer able to go herself, she'd ask for updates. What's blooming? Is the fountain working? Have the beds been weeded? She loved reading (fiction). She loved to travel, enjoying 6 trips to Europe, Montreal, a cross country driving trip with her brother Jeff, Bermuda, New Orleans, Florida and throughout New England. She loved soft fabrics, flowers, and just about any food that included whipped cream or a cream sauce. Besides her husband and 2 daughters, Bev leaves behind 3 siblings: Richard Morrill, Jeffrey Morrill and his wife Tami Sullivan, and Susan Morrill Queenan and her husband Jay Queenan. She leaves her 100 year old uncle, Robert Chouinard, and a long list of cousins, nieces and nephews on both sides of the family, brother-in-law Duncan MacBurnie and his wife Barbara, sisters-in-law Christine MacBurnie and Sandra MacBurnie. Bev insisted on no calling hours or funeral. But once the sadness has passed, there will be a true celebration of her long, successful, love-filled life. Donations in her honor can be made to the Belleville Improvement Society, PO Box 57, Nbpt MA 01950.

Al was very involved in the Malden Lions Club for years. He loved the Red Sox and enjoyed going to games with his grandson, John. He loved his vegetable garden, performing magic tricks, telling jokes and stories and anything to make people laugh. He learned to speak German though adult-ed classes and used it often with over 8 trips to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. His love for German began when he was stationed in Austria during the Korean War as a US Army photographer. This became his passion and was always seen behind a camera. After retirement, he and Bev moved to Amesbury, then to Newburyport to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Al became very well-known locally for his craft of origami 'shirts' made from $1 bills. He was thrilled to see the recipients' expression when he gave "the shirt off his back" to just about everyone he encountered...like hundreds of them over the years! Al leaves behind his three children and their spouses, Scott and Kathy Munro of Amesbury, Susan and Michael Toomey, of Newton, NH, and Jennifer and Andrew Logan of Amesbury. He also leaves nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren that he adored, his brother, Lawrence Munro and wife Maria of Miami, FL and his late brother Bob's wife, Connie Munro of Salem, MA, along with many nieces and nephews. Salman Rushdie is probably most closely associated with his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses, a book inspired by the life of the prophet Muhummad. The book was notorious not just for its contents but because of the intense backlash, and the threat it posed to his safety and wellbeing.

While Rushdie saw it as an exploration of Islamic culture, some Muslims saw it as blasphemous. The year after it published, Iran's supreme leader issued a fatwa, ordering Muslims to kill Rushdie.

Rushdie moved to New York in 2000, and was able to resume the public life of a popular author, but that all changed on August 12th, 2022 when a young man charged at Rushdie while he was on stage at an event, stabbing him at least a dozen times.

After two years, he has chronicled his brush with death, and the aftermath in his new memoir 'KNIFE'.

Wednesday the Environmental Protection Agency announced new drinking water standards to limit people's exposure to some PFAS chemicals. For decades, PFAS have been used to waterproof and stain-proof a variety of consumer products. These "forever chemicals" in a host of products — everything from raincoats and the Teflon of nonstick pans to makeup to furniture and firefighting foam. Because PFAS take a very long time to break down, they can accumulate in humans and the environment. Now, a growing body of research is linking them to human health problems like serious illness, some cancers, lower fertility and liver damage. Science correspondent Pien Huang joins the show today to talk through this new EPA rule — what the threshold for safe levels of PFAS in tap water is, why the rule is happening now and how the federal standards will be implemented.

Read more of Pien's reporting on the EPA's first ever rule on PFAS in drinking water.

In recent years, the body positivity movement has raised it's profile, especially on social media largely through self-described anti-diet and body positivity influencers.

These influencers and others like them represent a pivot away from the diet and fitness culture embodied by companies like weight watchers, which focuses on losing weight as a path to healthier living.

Today there is a broad "anti-diet" movement that posits that bodies can be healthy at any size. But some are trying to co-opt this movement.

An investigation by The Washington Post and the Examination found that large food companies are recruiting these influencers to promote sugary cereals and processed snacks.

As people who are part of the anti-diet movement saw an opportunity to practice and spread a message of self-love and acceptance, big food companies saw an opportunity to make money.

500 million years ago, the world was a very different place. During this period of time, known as the Cambrian period, basically all life was in the water. The ocean was brimming with animals that looked pretty different from the ones we recognize today — including a group of predatory worms with a throat covered in teeth and spines.

Researchers thought these tiny terrors died out at the end of the Cambrian period. But a paper published recently in the journal Biology Letters showed examples of a new species of this worm in the fossil record 25 million years after scientists thought they'd vanished from the Earth. One of the authors of the paper, Karma Nanglu, tells us how this finding may change how scientists understand the boundaries of time.
