US Special Committee on Aging

The United States Senate's Special Committee on Aging, currently chaired by Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), was established in 1961 as a temporary committee. It was granted permanent status in February, 1977. While special committees have no legislative authority, they can study issues, conduct oversight of programs, and investigate reports of fraud and waste. Note: Senior victims of fraud can report it to the Fraud Hotline.

The Special Committee on Aging has served as a focal point in the Senate for discussion and debate on matters relating to older Americans, and often submits its findings and recommendations for legislation to the Senate. The Committee additionally publishes materials of assistance to those interested in public policies which relate to the elderly.

For more information, visit the Committee's press releases page. It is a gold mine of legislative issue and hearing information, and resource links, plus: you can sign up for e-News; order publications; view the latest list of issues and press releases; get prescription assistance ... and more!

Learn about resources that are available to you locally. COA Outreach Coordinator Audrey Allen can help you learn about available local resources and current happenings in our community.

SNAP (Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program) can be used to supplement your food budget costs. Money saved through SNAP could be used toward your medical costs. SNAP is income-based, but it is your income after shelter and medical expenses are deducted.

Home heating and energy assistance (a.k.a. Fuel Assistance) season runs from November 1st through April 30th and is available for eligible homeowners and renters, including households whose cost of heat is included in the rent (12 month assistance in that case). It pays directly to your primary heating source vendor, and automatically includes electric and telephone bill discounts if you are eligible, saving you money to use for medical or other expenses.

The SHINE Program (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) provides free health insurance information, counseling and assistance to all Massachusetts residents with Medicare.

Newburyport - I, Warren Lewis Rothberg, of Newburyport, was given this gift of life, and after 77 wonderful years, it's time for me to return it. This is an extremely difficult thing that I do, but I have been an incredibly lucky man and for this I am eternally grateful. I was born in Providence, RI. on September 2, 1946, and on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, I passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, in my comfy recliner. I love and adore my two sons and my grandchildren, my daughters-in-law, amateur radio, my classical guitar, and airplanes of all kinds. But more than anything, I love my soul mate, Donna, and the magnificent 48 years of marriage and adventure we shared together. I am so thankful to each of you for such a wonderful life. I leave behind my sons, Rob and Aaron and my breathtaking grandchildren, Ryan and Amber, whom at their young ages have already achieved things that most will never accomplish in their entire life. I could not possibly be more proud of the remarkable young adults you have both become. Don't grieve for me, I am at peace. I take my mortal leave of this topsy-turvy world and go now to join my soulmate Donna, my long-lost family, friends and my cats who have waited so patiently for me all these many years. And as for my love of practical jokes, I timed this Rob while you were 9000 miles away on the other side of the globe. I WIN! Ha-ha! Peace and love to each and every one of you. No contact, Whiskey Bravo One Hotel Bravo Bravo. Silent key. 73s and God speed. Warren.

Salisbury - Kevin James McGrath, 57, passed away unexpectedly on April 16, 2024, at his home. He lived each day to its fullest and touched the lives of many with his vibrant spirit and unwavering kindness and generosity. Born and raised in Foxboro, Massachusetts, Kevin shared his childhood adventures with his brothers Joe, Bob, and Justin, and forging lifelong friendships that endured through the years. Known affectionately as "Eagle" by his closest friends, Kevin's youthful days were spent immersed in outdoor sports, laying the foundation for his lifelong love of activity and camaraderie. Kevin dedicated 37 years of his life to Verizon, where he not only excelled as an employee but also served as a beacon of humor and leadership. His role as a union steward and his pursuit of an associate's degree reflected his commitment to his work and personal growth. He made many close lifelong friends there through his magnetic personality and desire to be a team player. Kevin enjoyed the people and the career. In his late 20s, Kevin's life took a turn of selflessness when he moved in with his brother Joe's family to provide unwavering support after Joe's injury. For 18 years, Kevin was not just an uncle but a pillar of strength and guidance to Joe's children Dan, Stephy and Tina, who he taught to drive, coached their sports, took them on vacations to Sebago Lake, skiing in the White Mountains and exploring the forest of Mosley Park and supported all throughout their lives. He instilled passions into all of his nieces and nephews, including Julie, Andrew and Cassie, who adored him and whose lives wouldn't be the same without him. Through his dedication to the family, he taught them loyalty and love. Kevin loved kids and kids loved Kevin. His family and friends children always gravitated to him during any gathering as he was always the "fun" one who played and paid attention to them all. As a Pop-pop, he continued to spread the same fun and love as he had throughout his life. Kevin's love extended beyond his immediate family to all those he encountered. He touched the lives of so many people. He loved talking with people, and made friends everywhere he went. Kevin was a phenomenal storyteller, and it wasn't hard for him to get people belly laughing. He was always there for others, offering comfort and companionship whenever needed. Kevin had many passions in life. He loved music of many different genre from alternative to jazz to rock and everything in between. He attended more concerts than one can count from the time he was a teenager and continued throughout his life, his last concert this year being just a few months ago. Kevin loved to dance. He was always first on the dance floor, and music and dancing is how he started his beautiful relationship with the love of his life, Kim at the Sunday night blues at the Grog in Newburyport, one of his favorite cities. His biggest passion was sports. If there was a Bruins, Celtics or Patriots game on, you could be sure Kevin was watching it. He would get so excited and into the game and if he wasn't watching it with one of his buddies, he was on a group text stream non-stop commenting and sharing his excitement about the game. When Kevin wasn't watching sports he was either on the ice rink, tennis court, the ski slopes, the soccer field, his bicycle, snow-shoeing or running. He also did some coaching. He spent hours and days walking and sitting on the beach, which was his sanctuary. Together with Kim, Kevin lived the life of an adventurer, often including people they loved like their family and close friends for extended vacations. He took many trips to Hampton Beach, Ogunquit, Old Orchard Beach, Cape Cod, Portland, North Conway, Acadia, Burlington and Stowe. Kevin leaves behind a legacy of selflessness, love and laughter that will be dearly missed. Kevin is survived by his beloved partner, Kimberly Dillon, who will miss the love of her life always. He leaves behind his devoted brothers, Bob and Justin, and their wives, Anna and Rosa, and his sister-in-law-Nancy. He will also be dearly missed by his cherished nieces and nephews: Dan McGrath and wife Kaitlyn, Stephy McGrath and fiancé Sean, Tina McGrath and husband Jon, Julie McGrath and husband Mike along with their daughter Lyla, Andrew McGrath and partner Paige, and Cassie McGrath and her partner Noah. In addition, Kevin leaves behind his mother-in-law Donna Downs, and his stepchildren, Patrick Dillon and wife Huimin, Ashley Lento and husband Sam, Matthew Dillon and fiancé Molyda. His grandchildren, Lucia and Alivia. Kevin is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Al and Anne McGrath, his dear brother Joe McGrath, and his father-in-law, George Downs. Their memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Though he may have left this world, Kevin's spirit will continue to soar like the Eagle he was, forever remembered for his boundless love and generosity. Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday April 25, 2024 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Friday April26, 2024 at Immaculate Conception Church, friends are asked to go directly to Church. Burial will be private at a later date. Wednesday the Environmental Protection Agency announced new drinking water standards to limit people's exposure to some PFAS chemicals. For decades, PFAS have been used to waterproof and stain-proof a variety of consumer products. These "forever chemicals" in a host of products — everything from raincoats and the Teflon of nonstick pans to makeup to furniture and firefighting foam. Because PFAS take a very long time to break down, they can accumulate in humans and the environment. Now, a growing body of research is linking them to human health problems like serious illness, some cancers, lower fertility and liver damage. Science correspondent Pien Huang joins the show today to talk through this new EPA rule — what the threshold for safe levels of PFAS in tap water is, why the rule is happening now and how the federal standards will be implemented.

Read more of Pien's reporting on the EPA's first ever rule on PFAS in drinking water.

In recent years, the body positivity movement has raised it's profile, especially on social media largely through self-described anti-diet and body positivity influencers.

These influencers and others like them represent a pivot away from the diet and fitness culture embodied by companies like weight watchers, which focuses on losing weight as a path to healthier living.

Today there is a broad "anti-diet" movement that posits that bodies can be healthy at any size. But some are trying to co-opt this movement.

An investigation by The Washington Post and the Examination found that large food companies are recruiting these influencers to promote sugary cereals and processed snacks.

As people who are part of the anti-diet movement saw an opportunity to practice and spread a message of self-love and acceptance, big food companies saw an opportunity to make money.

500 million years ago, the world was a very different place. During this period of time, known as the Cambrian period, basically all life was in the water. The ocean was brimming with animals that looked pretty different from the ones we recognize today — including a group of predatory worms with a throat covered in teeth and spines.

Researchers thought these tiny terrors died out at the end of the Cambrian period. But a paper published recently in the journal Biology Letters showed examples of a new species of this worm in the fossil record 25 million years after scientists thought they'd vanished from the Earth. One of the authors of the paper, Karma Nanglu, tells us how this finding may change how scientists understand the boundaries of time.
