US Special Committee on Aging

The United States Senate's Special Committee on Aging, currently chaired by Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), was established in 1961 as a temporary committee. It was granted permanent status in February, 1977. While special committees have no legislative authority, they can study issues, conduct oversight of programs, and investigate reports of fraud and waste. Note: Senior victims of fraud can report it to the Fraud Hotline.

The Special Committee on Aging has served as a focal point in the Senate for discussion and debate on matters relating to older Americans, and often submits its findings and recommendations for legislation to the Senate. The Committee additionally publishes materials of assistance to those interested in public policies which relate to the elderly.

For more information, visit the Committee's press releases page. It is a gold mine of legislative issue and hearing information, and resource links, plus: you can sign up for e-News; order publications; view the latest list of issues and press releases; get prescription assistance ... and more!

Berwick - Christopher E. Utt, age 26, of Berwick, ME, died March 19 at Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport from complications of a traumatic brain injury. He was born in Concord, MA on December 1, 1997 to Warren and Cathy (Goucher) Utt and raised in Acton, MA before moving to Newburyport. In addition to his loving parents, Chris is survived by his brother James (Jamie) and partner Michelle Calvert of Somerville, MA., and beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends across the country. Chris graduated from Newburyport High School and attended the University of Maine, Orono. Growing up, Chris was fiercely competitive playing football, lacrosse, basketball, and ultimate frisbee with complete joy. Recently, he played semi-pro football with the Seacoast Warhawks. Influenced by his Grandfather Jim Utt, whom he adored and who passed away in 2019, he took up golf and enjoyed great success on the links, continuously working to improve his skills. Chris also loved the affection and funny antics of his animal rescues, Boots, Angel, Bama and Tiger. Chris endured struggles with anxiety, ADHD and depression throughout his life. He worked continuously to be healthy and manage this disease, finding that traditional prescribed medications sometimes caused more harm than good. He was personally helped by the use of medical marijuana and wanted others to understand and benefit from its healing potential. Following this passion, he established his business, Hummingbird Family Farm, in 2020 and worked hard to grow completely organic high quality craft medical cannabis. Chris became an award-winning Cultivator with extensive knowledge of the healing benefits of different strains and cannabinoids for treating his patients with chronic pain, PTSD, anxiety, insomnia, cancer, and more. His smile and infectious laugh could light up a room and he had a generous spirit determined to help others with his products as best he could. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life luncheon to honor Chris and share great memories on Saturday, April 6 from 1-4pm at the Newburyport Sr./Community Center, 331 High Street, Newburyport. Newburyport - Elaine Marie Dyer, longtime resident of Newburyport, died peacefully surrounded by her family on March 23, 2024. She was a woman loved by all who knew her. With an infectious smile, her beauty and laughter radiated to all in her presence. Born in Worcester, MA, January 20, 1938, she was the youngest of nine children of Italian immigrants, the late Nicolo and Theresa (Campanile) Miglionico. During her life she had many roles: a daughter, a sister, a wife, and a mother, but her most favorite was being affectionately known as "The Ninster" to her grandchildren (and proudly displayed on her baby blue Cadillac). Elaine's love for them was endless. If she wasn't sewing beautiful clothes or making a Halloween costume that could win any contest—many times taking home a ribbon—then she was pulling them in a wagon for walks and exploring outside. Elaine adored babies, and you could never walk down a street without her stopping at every baby carriage to say hello. As a mom she was always at her childrens' schools, whether dressing up in costume for the kids, running the PTO, or heading the Jingle Bell Fair. She was always involved, and she always sang how much she loved them a bushel and a peck. Elaine was an adventurous woman who said yes to anything from skiing the slopes of New England to driving a motorcycle, all while saving time to make her glamorous Cher lookalike outfits for the Saturday night Knights of Columbus dances. It is those years and those memories that we cherish. Her overwhelming struggle with Lewy Body Dementia robbed her later years with confusion and frustration. The family watched as we lost our mother day by day. She will now get to rejoice with peace and be with her loved ones who passed on before her. Our mom will forever be in our hearts, and we will keep her memory alive everyday. Our love for her is never ending. "Those we love and lose are always connected by heartstrings into infinity." Treasured memories will forever be cherished by her four daughters, Natalie Moore, Marie-elena Gray, Angela Wadleigh and Lisa-Jo Brightman, along with her twelve adoring grandchildren who were her pride and joy; extended family and dear friends. In addition to her parents and her eight siblings, she was also predeceased by her only son, Thomas N. Pecorelli, who was a victim of one of the 9-11 plane crashes, and her grandson, Cory Brightman. A period of visitation will be held Monday, March 25, 2024 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, immediately followed by a Service at the funeral home with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery, where Elaine will be placed to eternal rest beside her beloved son, Thomas.

He went on to help many members of the north shore community with their properties while operating TG Services for 10 years. He had many loved ones, extended family and friends who will dearly miss his infectious laughter and his bright and loving character. He collected coins, was an avid motorcycle rider, and had a heart of gold. A proud father, he was helping his daughter plan her wedding this fall in Rockport, MA. He was researching new ways to keep himself from crying every two minutes. He made it very clear to both of his children that they were his whole world and left a legacy of care and joy that they are glad to carry on in his memory. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Benjamin Alan Theriault and his girlfriend Amie Serino of Andover, one daughter, Margaret Virginia Theriault and her fiancé Matthew Greenberg of Salem; one sister, Toni Grande and her husband Anthony of Beverly. Amesbury - Philip R. Dandurant, 67 of Amesbury passed away Friday March 15 at Lahey Hospital in Burlington surrounded by his family. He lived in Amesbury all his life and attended Sacred Heart School, Whittier Tech where learned a trade in Diesel Mechanics and later Northern Essex College where he earned an associate degree. Back in 1979 Phil had suffered a swimming accident which left him paralyzed from the chest down. Having been faced with this disability did not stop him. He lived at the Towers on Main Street for many years and was very active in that community. On most Friday nights you could find Phil in the function room calling out bingo for the residents and he was also involved in many other events. He was currently serving on the Amesbury Housing Authority Board and he had also worked extensively with other people with disabilities, served as an access monitor for the state. In the winter when he couldn't get outside, he also took up the hobby of building dollhouses and mini-Gazebos. His past couple of houses he donated to a local store in Amesbury which were raffled off in the name of an employee that had passed from a rare disease. Phil loved his family and had many friends. He was a kindhearted, courageous, selfless, quiet man. You would see him pushing around town and there was a time where he pushed 10 miles a day but as he got older, he was unable to do that. If you drove by the Towers on a nice day, there was Phil sitting out front waving if he knew you or people would stop and chat with him which meant a lot to him. He faced many obstacles in his life but always dealt with them in a positive way. Over the years Phil had many Personal Care Givers which the family would like to extend their gratitude which helped him get his day started. Most recently Ashley and his sister Teresa which we are so grateful for. Also, would like to thank the Amesbury Fire Dept who had helped Phil out a few times. This is something Phil had written when the Newburyport News had interviewed him about his dollhouse making which we would like to share. "Be grateful for what you have, if you are going to feel angry all your life, you won't get far. You've got to turn around and accept it. If you don't accept it, you're in trouble." Philip leaves his siblings, Michael from Arizona, Mark from Amesbury, Tim from Kingston N.H. his sisters Pauline Daniels and husband Todd from Seabrook, Teresa Dandurant and fiancé Larry from Amesbury and Donna Tessimond from Hampton, N.H. and his dear Cousin Cathy from Florida. Also, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Predeceased by his parents Paul and Aline Dandurant and his brother Dean. There will be no calling hours. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday April 13th at 10 a.m. at St. Andre Bessette Parish on 2 School St and followed by interment in St. Joseph's in Amesbury. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Spinal Cord Injury Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 125 Nashua St. Boston, MA Are by the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home in Amesbury.

Newburyport - Reverend Helen M. Murgida, PhD (Sampson), a beacon of light and compassion, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, in Newburyport, MA at the age of 80. Helen was born on September 18, 1943 and grew up in Somerville, MA. She graduated from Matignon High School in 1961 and attended Northeastern University where she earned a bachelors and masters degree in Education in 1966 and 1968 respectively. Helen's profound impact on education and her unwavering commitment to inclusivity began to blossom during her tenure as a teacher at the Cotting School from 1966 to 1971, a school dedicated to serving children with a wide range of disabilities since 1893. In 1969 she and her late husband Dr. Frank Murgida, PhD moved to Georgetown, MA where she and her dear friend and business partner Sandra DeVellis opened the non-profit and inclusionary preschool named Pentucket Workshop in 1972. This remarkable school – ahead of its time and still in operation – broke barriers and championed equal education for all children, irrespective of their physical, financial, or cognitive differences. Concurrently, she also taught early childhood education at Northern Essex Community College for many years. In 1976, Helen and Frank settled in West Boxford, MA, raising their two beloved sons and became active members of LaSalette Catholic Church in Ipswich, MA. In 1994, Helen and Frank moved to Newburyport, MA where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Driven by love of learning and service, Helen returned to college at the age of 52, earning a second master's degree in special education from Salem State University in 1996. Her passion led her to work in special education in various public and charter schools in the greater Boston area before embarking on her journey to obtain a PhD in Special Education, specializing in autism, from Nova Southeastern University in 2006, at the age of 62. From 2001 to 2009, Helen served as Head of School at Pathways Academy for autistic children at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA. Simultaneously, she was a liaison with the Massachusetts Department of Education. In 2009, she was hired by the Massachusetts Department of Education in the Office of Special Education Schools where she traveled throughout the state ensuring the physical, emotional, and educational standards of Massachusetts' special needs schools. She dutifully served in this role and fought for the children and communities of the Commonwealth until the time of her passing. Ever the champion for those in need, Helen felt a calling in 2006 to work within her faith community in addition to educating children. Helen's pursuit of spiritual enlightenment led her to The Chaplaincy Institute of Maine, where she studied from 2006 to 2008, ultimately becoming an ordained interfaith minister. In 2015, she became an active member of the First Religious Society of Newburyport (FRS), Unitarian Universalist Church where she served as an Affiliate Minister who was passionately devoted to a ministry of spiritual inclusion and physical and mental accessibility for all. Even during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic, she bravely fulfilled her ministry, officiating countless memorial services in person as well as new-born dedications and weddings for the North Shore community which she continued until her final days, all while still working for the Department of Education. Helen also served the city of Newburyport, MA as a FRS representative at city hall ceremonies to lead opening prayers for public meetings such as Juneteenth Celebrations, State of the City, Jeanne Geiger Annual Walk Against Domestic Violence, and other local gatherings. She will be dearly missed by all those who had the good fortune to know her as a family member, friend, co-worker, and spiritual advisor. Helen's legacy will forever be cherished by her family, friends, colleagues, and those who sought her spiritual guidance. She was predeceased by parents Dr. Joseph Sampson, MD and Helen Vodoklys Sampson and her husband Frank Murgida, all of Somerville, MA. She is survived by her loving sons Matthew and Lucas Murgida and her brother Joseph Sampson Jr., sister-in-law Joyce Sampson, and her niece and nephew Christine and Joseph Sampson III. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Brenda Murgida Taylor and her family, Jeff Taylor, and her nephew and niece Benjamin and Kate Taylor. Helen will also be lovingly missed by her brother-in-law Alan Murgida. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday April 11, 2024 at Paul C Rogers & Sons Funeral Home in Amesbury, MA from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A memorial service honoring Helen's extraordinary life will take place on Saturday April 13, 2024 at First Religious Society of Newburyport Unitarian Universalist Church at 1:00 PM in Newburyport, MA followed by a reception in the church's parish hall. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the 501c3 non-profit preschool Pentucket Workshop Inc. at 161 West Main Street, Georgetown, MA, 01833. According to the CDC, about one in four adults has a fear of needles. Many of those people say the phobia started when they were kids. For some people, the fear of needles is strong enough that they avoid getting important treatments, vaccines or tests. That poses a serious problem for public health. Researchers have helped develop a five step plan to help prevent what they call "needless pain" for kids getting injections or their blood drawn. Guest host Tom Dreisbach talks with Dr. Stefan Friedrichsdorf of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, who works with a team to implement the plan at his own hospital. Friedrichsdorf told us some of the most important research on eliminating pain has come from researchers in Canada. Learn more about their work here.

Neuroscientist Nathan Sawtell has spent a lot of time studying the electric elephantnose fish. These fish send and decipher weak electric signals, which Sawtell hopes will eventually help neuroscientists better understand how the brain filters sensory information about the outside world. As Sawtell has studied these electric critters, he's had a lingering question: why do they always seem to organize themselves in a particular orientation. At first, he couldn't figure out why, but a new study released this week in Nature may have an answer: the fish are creating an electrical network larger than any field a single fish can muster alone, and providing collective knowledge about potential dangers in the surrounding water.
