US Special Committee on Aging

The United States Senate's Special Committee on Aging, currently chaired by Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), was established in 1961 as a temporary committee. It was granted permanent status in February, 1977. While special committees have no legislative authority, they can study issues, conduct oversight of programs, and investigate reports of fraud and waste. Note: Senior victims of fraud can report it to the Fraud Hotline.

The Special Committee on Aging has served as a focal point in the Senate for discussion and debate on matters relating to older Americans, and often submits its findings and recommendations for legislation to the Senate. The Committee additionally publishes materials of assistance to those interested in public policies which relate to the elderly.

For more information, visit the Committee's press releases page. It is a gold mine of legislative issue and hearing information, and resource links, plus: you can sign up for e-News; order publications; view the latest list of issues and press releases; get prescription assistance ... and more!

Learn about resources that are available to you locally. COA Outreach Coordinator Audrey Allen can help you learn about available local resources and current happenings in our community.

SNAP (Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program) can be used to supplement your food budget costs. Money saved through SNAP could be used toward your medical costs. SNAP is income-based, but it is your income after shelter and medical expenses are deducted.

Home heating and energy assistance (a.k.a. Fuel Assistance) season runs from November 1st through April 30th and is available for eligible homeowners and renters, including households whose cost of heat is included in the rent (12 month assistance in that case). It pays directly to your primary heating source vendor, and automatically includes electric and telephone bill discounts if you are eligible, saving you money to use for medical or other expenses.

The SHINE Program (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) provides free health insurance information, counseling and assistance to all Massachusetts residents with Medicare.

Cyndi was born at Anna Jaques Hospital on June 14, 1951, the oldest child of Joseph ("Jim") and Marie (Cormier) Lapre. She was raised in Newburyport and graduated from Newburyport High School and the University of New Hampshire. After earning her degree at UNH, she had a lengthy and successful career as a social worker for the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare. Upon her retirement from social work, she embarked on a very rewarding second career as a Title I Tutor at Seabrook Elementary School, which she thoroughly enjoyed for several years. She was "a natural" when it came to working with children, and she truly thrived when she was working with "her kids". She was well-respected and well-loved by her colleagues in both of her careers. Cyndi possessed a quick wit, a fantastic sense of humor, a warm smile, an attentive ear, and a loving and generous heart, deeply touching many of those around her. She was a joy to be around, she made friends everywhere she went, and she made those whom she met feel comfortable right away. Her telling of her many humorous stories (many of them self-deprecating and most of them true) made for much laughter and enjoyment. She faced numerous health challenges throughout her life with great fortitude, unfailing courage and good humor; she was a hero to many. A resident of Salisbury for over 35 years, Cyndi was parishioner of the Star of the Sea Church for many years, where she taught religious education. Additionally, she served as a Girl Scout Leader for several years, mentoring many young girls in the process. She was a voracious reader, a talented baker and cake decorator and an avid "Jeopardy" fan. Cyndi is survived by her husband of 28 years, Henry T. Colby of Salisbury; her daughter, Jennifer E. St. Cyr of Amesbury; her son, Gregory C. Parisi of Hampton, NH; her grandchildren, Ryan St. Cyr of Seabrook, NH and Ashley St. Cyr of Amesbury; her sister, Joanne E. Gilbert of Contoocook, NH; her brothers, Robert G. Lapre (Tracey) of Amesbury and Peter G. Lapre (Raymond) of Grantham, NH; her aunt and godmother, Patricia Cynewski of Newburyport; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Wednesday the Environmental Protection Agency announced new drinking water standards to limit people's exposure to some PFAS chemicals. For decades, PFAS have been used to waterproof and stain-proof a variety of consumer products. These "forever chemicals" in a host of products — everything from raincoats and the Teflon of nonstick pans to makeup to furniture and firefighting foam. Because PFAS take a very long time to break down, they can accumulate in humans and the environment. Now, a growing body of research is linking them to human health problems like serious illness, some cancers, lower fertility and liver damage. Science correspondent Pien Huang joins the show today to talk through this new EPA rule — what the threshold for safe levels of PFAS in tap water is, why the rule is happening now and how the federal standards will be implemented.

Read more of Pien's reporting on the EPA's first ever rule on PFAS in drinking water.

In recent years, the body positivity movement has raised it's profile, especially on social media largely through self-described anti-diet and body positivity influencers.

These influencers and others like them represent a pivot away from the diet and fitness culture embodied by companies like weight watchers, which focuses on losing weight as a path to healthier living.

Today there is a broad "anti-diet" movement that posits that bodies can be healthy at any size. But some are trying to co-opt this movement.

An investigation by The Washington Post and the Examination found that large food companies are recruiting these influencers to promote sugary cereals and processed snacks.

As people who are part of the anti-diet movement saw an opportunity to practice and spread a message of self-love and acceptance, big food companies saw an opportunity to make money.

Neuroscientist Nathan Sawtell has spent a lot of time studying the electric elephantnose fish. These fish send and decipher weak electric signals, which Sawtell hopes will eventually help neuroscientists better understand how the brain filters sensory information about the outside world. As Sawtell has studied these electric critters, he's had a lingering question: why do they always seem to organize themselves in a particular orientation. At first, he couldn't figure out why, but a new study released this week in Nature may have an answer: the fish are creating an electrical network larger than any field a single fish can muster alone, and providing collective knowledge about potential dangers in the surrounding water.
