US Special Committee on Aging

The United States Senate's Special Committee on Aging, currently chaired by Senator Rick Scott (R-FL), was established in 1961 as a temporary committee. It was granted permanent status in February, 1977. While special committees have no legislative authority, they can study issues, conduct oversight of programs, and investigate reports of fraud and waste. Note: Senior victims of fraud can report it to the Fraud Hotline.

The Special Committee on Aging has served as a focal point in the Senate for discussion and debate on matters relating to older Americans, and often submits its findings and recommendations for legislation to the Senate. The Committee additionally publishes materials of assistance to those interested in public policies which relate to the elderly.

For more information, visit the Committee's press releases page. It is a gold mine of legislative issue and hearing information, and resource links, plus: you can sign up for e-News; order publications; view the latest list of issues and press releases; get prescription assistance ... and more!

Information for SHINE - Fuel Assistance - SNAP Programs

Learn about resources that are available to you locally. COA Outreach Coordinator Audrey Allen can help you learn about available local resources and current happenings in our community.

SNAP (Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program) can be used to supplement your food budget costs. Money saved through SNAP could be used toward your medical costs. SNAP is income-based, but it is your income after shelter and medical expenses are deducted.

Home heating and energy assistance (a.k.a. Fuel Assistance) season runs from November 1st through April 30th and is available for eligible homeowners and renters, including households whose cost of heat is included in the rent (12 month assistance in that case). It pays directly to your primary heating source vendor, and automatically includes electric and telephone bill discounts if you are eligible, saving you money to use for medical or other expenses.

The SHINE Program (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) provides free health insurance information, counseling and assistance to all Massachusetts residents with Medicare.

Middletown Springs - Kathleen Mary Doyle (62) died at her home in Middletown Springs, Vermont, on July 11, 2025, brought to rest by brain cancer, leaving summer morning dew, and Yellowthroats and Ovenbirds in the back woods where she was in her element, reminding us of life beyond the family and friends she loved. Born March 8, 1963, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, she was the third of four children of Eleanor May (Griffith, 94 of North Andover, Massachusetts) and Hugh Joseph Doyle. She reportedly cared for as many as 17 dolls at once as a young girl and brought the same attention and joy to raising two boys later in life. A graduate of Newburyport High School (1981), she went on to study Natural Resource Management at Cornell University (B.S.,1986), including senior research on subalpine heathlands in the Mahoosucs of Maine. After college, Kathy worked for The Nature Conservancy in North Carolina and did graduate research at the University of Wyoming on plant succession following fire in Grand Teton ecosystems (M.S. Botany, 1994; PhD Botany 1997). Moving to Vermont in 1997, she brought a systems-based approach to her biology classrooms and conservation work – teaching on the faculty of Green Mountain and Middlebury Colleges, serving as a local environmental consultant, and organizing nature camps to inspire the next generation of land stewards. Her three siblings and their families remained close – Anne (Jim, Chris, and Corey Stock), JD, and Sue (Pete, Turner, and Zachary Britz). High school friends strengthened bonds over time, and college and graduate school friends continued to enrich her life. During college years Kathy lived for a few months with Swedish farmers Birgit and Lars Nilsson, who became like family. In Chapel Hill, fellow plant ecologist and sweetheart Jim Graves brought Kathy wild grapes and followed her to Wyoming where they were married under the care of Wyoming Friends meeting on September 30, 1995. They raised sons, John (born 1999) and Daniel (born 2002) among friends and flying baseballs in Middletown Springs. A service will be held July 19th at 1pm in the Pawlet Community Church (UCC), Pawlet, VT. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Natural Resources Council, 11 Baldwin St., Montpelier, VT 05602 or to the Northeast Wilderness Trust, 17 State St., #302, Montpelier, VT 05602, two organizations Kathy valued for the way they apply science to keep species and ecosystems healthy in both working and wild landscapes. Tossing Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Amesbury - Janet Marie Riley, affectionately known to friends and family as Rudy or Rat, passed away on July 8, 2025, after a long decline in health. Born on September 17, 1949, Janet was known for her infectious smile, sharp wit, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. Janet grew up on Lake Street in Middleton, Massachusetts, where she developed lifelong ties to her family, neighbors, and community. Her early years were spent running between Lake Street and the Richardson family farm, creating bonds and memories that would anchor her for decades to come. In seventh grade, she met her soulmate, Phil Riley, and boldly declared to her best friend that she would one day marry him. She did just that, and the two remained inseparable until Phil's passing in 2022. After earning a teaching degree from Salve Regina College, Janet spent a few years living in Danvers with Phil before returning home to Lake Street to raise their family. She raised her children next door to her parents, creating a rare and beautiful intergenerational household full of care, laughter, and love. In 2009, she moved to Amesbury, where she spent her final years living with two of her grandchildren—continuing her deep commitment to family bonds across generations. A devoted and beloved teacher, Janet spent nearly 30 years at Howe-Manning and Fuller Meadow Elementary Schools in Middleton. Teaching was more than a job to her—it was a calling. She had a natural ability to connect with children, and many former students and their families continued to express gratitude to her throughout their lives. She was the kind of teacher you never forget. Janet loved gardening, spending time at the beach, and sharing a good story—or some juicy gossip—over a cold beer. She adored playing cards and board games (even if she sometimes bent the rules), and her warm presence made everyone feel seen, accepted, and valued. Her sharp humor, open heart, and streak of mischief made her not only a great friend but also a lot of fun to spend time with. Friends from childhood, school, and the broader Middleton community remained close to her for life, and she to them. Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Phil. Together, they built a home filled with love and raised three grateful children. She is survived by her children and their partners Ben and Jon, Cory and Ned, and Jake and Katherine; and her grandchildren Sadie, Anderson, Bella, Natasha, Percy, and Pavel (and his partner Tatum). She will be missed by her sister and best friend Anne Daniels; her brother Paul Richardson and his wife Susan. She also leaves behind her much-loved niece and nephews from the Daniels (Paul, Kim and Dave), the Richardsons (Phil, Peter and Chris) and the Riley's (Cavan and Brandon). She will be especially missed by her roommates Sadie, Anderson, Ned Bolth, Cathy Riley, and Jeanne Riley. Janet's legacy is one of loyalty, laughter, and love. Her devotion to her family, her students, and her community never wavered. She made the world brighter, funnier, and more welcoming—and Heaven will be a lot more fun when she arrives. Visitation hours will be held on Monday, July 14th from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at Mackey Funeral Home, Route 114 in Middleton, MA. Family members will say a few words of remembrance at 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please honor her memory with a donation to support students and teachers in Amesbury through the Amesbury Education Foundation, Inc (https://www.aefionline.com/support/) or Middleton through the Masconomet Education Foundation (https://mascoef.org/donate). see www.mackeyfuneralhome.com.

Newburyport - Myron Moss, age 82, died at Lahey Hospital on June 20, 2025. He is survived by his loving family - his wife of 60 years, Maureen Daley, his sister Regina Moss, his children Elizabeth Levine and Gregory Moss, his son-in-law Lawrence Levine, his daughter-in-law Rhiannon Frazier, and his cherished grandchildren Jenna and Jake Levine. Myron was born in Brooklyn in 1942. He spent his formative years in Sheepshead Bay. While Myron lived in Newburyport MA for the majority of his life, his attachment to the culture and spirit of Brooklyn never waned. Myron was a lifelong teacher. He began his career teaching English at Halsey Junior High School in Brooklyn, NY. In 1970, upon accepting a position at Newburyport High School, he moved his family north to Massachusetts. He taught English in Newburyport for thirty years. His teaching is remembered fondly by the hundreds of students who passed through his classroom. Myron was a generous and empathetic educator. He found books that spoke to his students, and devised assignments that inspired them to engage in writing and critical thinking. A born storyteller, Myron often used autobiographical anecdotes as a way of connecting with his students. He was a popular and beloved teacher - on the streets of Newburyport, he could hardly walk a block without a former student calling out, "Hey Mr. Moss!" in recognition and appreciation of their time with him. In addition to his work as an educator, Myron was a restless entrepreneur. In the late 1970s, he opened the West Newbury House of Pizza. He also spent a summer running a clam shack on the beach in Plum Island, and later did a stint at the 4D+1 in Salisbury. He was also a successful real estate developer, having bought and renovated a number of properties in Newburyport. Myron retired from teaching in 2001, beginning a new chapter of his professional life. He went on to spend a decade working as an educational consultant for the computer software company, PTC. Concurrently, he served as a Union Rep for the Massachusetts Teachers' Union. He volunteered at a number of correctional facilities, teaching English to incarcerated people. In the last several years, he volunteered at the non-profit organization, Community Service of Newburyport, providing aid to people in need. He was also on the board of the Friends of the Newburyport Library. Myron's desire to help those less fortunate than himself was a lifelong passion, a value he embodied until the end of his life. Myron was also a remarkably creative person. While much of his work remained private, he was a prolific writer of short fiction, capturing the characters and stories of his youth in sharp, hilarious prose. He was an occasional performer, acting in readings of new plays by Newburyport writers. In 2004, he and his son Gregory shared a stage, each performing a one person play at the Actor's Studio in Newburyport. He was a dedicated supporter of the arts in Newburyport, attending the many shows in which his wife, Maureen, performed. While sometimes ambivalent about becoming a New Englander, Myron was a significant and central figure in Newburyport. His friendships in the education, arts, and business communities showed a deep investment in the well-being of the city and its people. In his many roles, and especially for his family, Myron always led with warmth, connection and a playful sense of humor. He was an empathetic listener and trusted confidant. His passing leaves a great absence in the lives of his family, friends, and the community. Services were private. Donations in Myron's memory may be sent to Community Service of Newburyport.
