US Special Committee on Aging

The United States Senate's Special Committee on Aging, currently chaired by Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), was established in 1961 as a temporary committee. It was granted permanent status in February, 1977. While special committees have no legislative authority, they can study issues, conduct oversight of programs, and investigate reports of fraud and waste. Note: Senior victims of fraud can report it to the Fraud Hotline.

The Special Committee on Aging has served as a focal point in the Senate for discussion and debate on matters relating to older Americans, and often submits its findings and recommendations for legislation to the Senate. The Committee additionally publishes materials of assistance to those interested in public policies which relate to the elderly.

For more information, visit the Committee's press releases page. It is a gold mine of legislative issue and hearing information, and resource links, plus: you can sign up for e-News; order publications; view the latest list of issues and press releases; get prescription assistance ... and more!

What kind of vehicle is the 2025 Chevrolet Trax? What does it compare to? The 2025 Trax is a small SUV with a big interior. Compare it to the Buick Envista, Toyota Corolla Cross, and Kia Seltos. Is the 2025 Chevrolet Trax a good SUV? It’s a highly rational choice, that’s for sure. We like the Trax for its styling, its interior space...

Electric pickup trucks may not have the massive towing capacity of heavy duty diesel trucks, but for virtually every other purpose they are superior to gas- or diesel-powered trucks: they're cleaner, quieter, quicker, more fun to drive, more tech-forward, and in many cases more capable. Chevrolet has a full lineup of utility vehicles, but at the smaller end of the spectrum, it’s created some confusion. It used to sell the small TrailBlazer (which had been a large SUV in the 1990s) and an even smaller Trax—but for 2024, the Trax grew up, and now is larger than the TrailBlazer. Confused? Learn about resources that are available to you locally. COA Outreach Coordinator Audrey Allen can help you learn about available local resources and current happenings in our community.

SNAP (Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program) can be used to supplement your food budget costs. Money saved through SNAP could be used toward your medical costs. SNAP is income-based, but it is your income after shelter and medical expenses are deducted.

Home heating and energy assistance (a.k.a. Fuel Assistance) season runs from November 1st through April 30th and is available for eligible homeowners and renters, including households whose cost of heat is included in the rent (12 month assistance in that case). It pays directly to your primary heating source vendor, and automatically includes electric and telephone bill discounts if you are eligible, saving you money to use for medical or other expenses.

The SHINE Program (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) provides free health insurance information, counseling and assistance to all Massachusetts residents with Medicare.

Exeter - With much sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Susan (Barbaro) Gove on Sept 17, 2024. While traveling in Europe, Susan succumbed to a cardiac arrest despite the valiant efforts of the doctors and staff at St Thomas' Hospital in London. Susan was the youngest child of Nancy (Toothaker) and John Barbaro. She is survived by her sister, Christine and husband, Judson Ludeking of So Hampton NH, and brother, Wayne and wife, Nancy J. (Courage) Barbaro of Salisbury MA. Susie had settled into condo living in Exeter NH and was loved by all she met. It didn't take much to make her smile and she worked hard to make all around her happy, especially her Thursday and Friday condo groups. Susie will be forever remembered by many nieces and nephews; Kelly and husband John Doherty; Amanda Ludeking; Jessica Stevens; Katherine and husband Roberto Pinto; Casey (Barbaro) and husband Tyley Bzdak; Adam Barbaro and wife Bethany; and grandnieces; Gracie and Riley Doherty; Quinn, Harper and Clementine Stevens; Mackenzie Barbaro; and grandnephew, Robbie Pinto. She was predeceased by her nephew, Andrew Barbaro. Susie attended and graduated from Amesbury High School, class of 1971, and graduated from White Pines College where she pursued her love of photography and media arts. She went on to work in the family business doing advertising, customer relations and working in the plant, making many friends of her co-workers. A quiet soul, Suzie spent many hours building "extreme" Lego models, knitting and spending time with her many nieces and nephews. In her younger days, she loved coaching softball and was a mentor to numerous young ladies. Recently Suzie became our "hero" by spending many months with our aging parents, caring for them with love and kindness, putting her own life on hold while serving them. Susie holds a special place in our families' hearts. We will miss her dearly. There will be no services at this time as we try to find the appropriate way to honor her life.

Pembroke - Kevin Moore Shannahan, beloved son of Brian and Marilyn Shannahan of West Newbury, MA, passed away suddenly on January 6, 2025 at Massachusetts General Hospital, after a brief illness. Kevin was forty-six years old. Kevin faced multiple physical challenges when he entered the world, but even as an infant, he was a fighter. Despite his many disabilities, Kevin grew and thrived alongside his two sisters. He moved to West Newbury in 1986 and attended special education classes in the Pentucket Regional School District before making a brave move to New England Village, a community for intellectually disabled adults, in 2000. Kevin thrived at the Village, attaining a level of autonomy and independence never imagined by his family. Kevin loved swimming at the Village's Wellness Center and going on outings with staff and other residents. He loved shopping, picnics, visiting the beach and sitting beneath his beloved trees in his hammock. Kevin also liked to look stylish, and had strong opinions over his wardrobe. Over the years, he developed a love for the color green. It was the exact Kelly green of his track suit when he ran with the Page School Special Olympics as a child. Kevin was a gentle soul, an innocent, who only brought light into the world. He was incredibly intuitive and perceptive and will forever be remembered for his infectious smile. In addition to his parents, Kevin is survived by his sisters, Courtney Kaminski, her husband John, and their two children, Isabella and Luke, of West Newbury, and Kelsey Ricci, and her husband Michael, of Brooklyn, New York, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Kevin's loss is also deeply shared by his extended family at New England Village in Pembroke, Massachusetts. Kevin will be honored at a memorial Mass in Boston at a later date.
